If you’ve been a resident of Los Angeles for a while, you know who Fritz Coleman is. As the very popular weatherman on NBC 4 Los Angeles for forty years, he told us whether to wear shorts or a sweater in our temperate and seasonless weather.
Fritz is also a standup comedian and is performing his show Unassisted Living at NOHO’s historic El Portal Theatre, the last Sunday of the month indefinitely, in the intimate Monroe Forum.
His audience is the Medicare crowd. As a member of that demographic, it was easy for me to relate. Looking at the audience, I felt young, and I’m 71.
Cocktails were served before the show, making it a fun and relaxed event.
The show’s opening act was Boomer comedienne Wendy Liebman, whose style is slow and relaxed but very funny. She subtly touched on some of the issues we women experience as we age: hormones, husbands, sex over 60, and aches and pains.
The only thing I objected to was that she kept mentioning her weight problem. She’s tiny and skinny as a rail. If you want to talk about a tummy, I’ll show you mine! LOL!
She’s been married for 22 years and polled the audience members on how long they’ve been wed. One couple took the prize at 75 years. When asked what makes a marriage successful, many agreed it was having a sense of humor. That makes perfect sense.
Fritz Coleman was as charming as ever. I always enjoyed watching him and Fred Roggin, the sportscaster, share quips on TV. Fritz has also been the honorary mayor of Toluca Lake for many years.
During the show, Fritz admitted he faked being a meteorologist. But, as long as he could read the teleprompter, no one minded as long as he gave us the forecast.
He also delved into his non-existent sex life and announced he is looking for a partner. The guy is in great shape and would be a decent catch. Any takers?
He told us stories about past girlfriends, including his first sexual experience. Later, he found out the woman had become a lesbian. I had a similar experience. My first boyfriend in high school came out as gay. You always wonder if you were the cause of it.
Sometimes he divulged a little too much information about his past sexual escapades, but the audience ate it up.
The show runs for an hour and a half and is a fun way to enjoy a Sunday afternoon and still be home before dark.
