Have you ever wanted to create art with freedom and abandonment but don’t have a space in your home to throw paint around? Shot of Art gives people ages 3 to 103 opportunities to bring out their wild and bold artsy side.
Watch me do Fluid Art in this video
Its studio is located at the edge of Boyle Heights in the L.A. Arts District in a commercial area outside of downtown. The street is lined with other creative enterprises, coffeehouses, eclectic restaurants, and street murals.
Shot of Art offers several exciting experiences to enjoy with friends or one-on-one such as Shooting + Spinning Class where you shoot down paint-filled balloons, Paint “Therapy” in Neon(with glowing paint and water guns), Fluid Art where you create a liquid abstract masterpiece, Fluid Bear (fluid paint on a bear), and more.
It’s delightfully messy in a colorful way but full raincoats are provided so there is no need to feel restricted and you can go full out with your imagination.
The space is also used for parties, corporate events, and After Dark events.
When you make a reservation, you must sign a waiver to release liability if you slip in paint but that is only a precaution. I stayed upright.
My Fluid Art Experience
I was told to arrive at the exact time of my booking and to wear paint-friendly clothing. Sessions last 45 minutes. The most important instruction was to bring positive energy, which is most conducive to creativity.
Inside near the front desk is a painted couch with a colorfully paint splotched wall behind it. It’s a great place to take Instagram photos.
I was given a full-length raincoat to wear, and shoe covers. That was a relief because I didn’t own paint attire and planned to blow out a fairly good tee shirt and shorts. The raincoat completely protected me.
Ozzy was my guide during my Fluid Art session. He was friendly and super helpful. I set up a small tripod to memorialize my experience on my smartphone.
I picked out 4 paint colors that were placed next to a canvas. Ozzy told me to pour my colors one by one into half a plastic bottomless cup on top of the canvas and let them seep into the canvas. We did this several times and moved the canvas around. When I was done, my painting looked like the Caribbean Ocean with seafoam. I loved it!
I was also invited to make my mark on a surrounding wall and painted a strange eyeball with my first initial.
A sink was provided to wash my hands. It was the only part of my body that had paint on it.
Each painting takes about 5 days to dry so you need to retrieve it within 2 weeks.
The sessions offer fun ways to experiment with paint and get something awesome to put on your wall.
My one-on-one session was amazing and I can only imagine how fun group sessions are.
My masterpiece
This was my finished Fluid Art piece that I picked up 1 week later after it dried. It reminds me of a trip I took to the Caribbean.
