The annual Chocolate and Art Show in Los Angeles celebrated its 10th anniversary in June, 2023. It took place at The Vortex in Downtown L.A. Emerging and established artists displayed their work for sale in a large warehouse that is used as a performance and event venue.
More vendors were set up outdoors as well as a taco pop-up, and a small performance stage.
According to the show’s website, its purpose is to contribute to positive social change by building a network of artists of all mediums, collectors, and art enthusiasts to come together for two nights to celebrate the arts and support local businesses and local arts.
The event also works to bring awareness to the organization’s non-profit Art is for Trauma which helps civilians and military veterans by pairing them with artists to help in their recovery.
Chocolate and Art shows take place in Los Angeles, Dallas, Atlanta, Houston, and San Francisco.
I came early and missed out on the flowing chocolate fountains which had not been set up yet but I did have some wine. In the evening there was music and a more party-like atmosphere ensued with body painting that I saw on Instagram.
The area of town where The Vortex is located on Olympic Blvd is on the outskirts of downtown Los Angeles with graffiti-painted warehouses, cannabis dispensaries, and other businesses. But that is interesting also as there is urban artwork and stunning murals everywhere including at The Vortex.
The venue does not have a parking lot, but I found a spot nearby. However, I left before dark because I didn’t want to walk back to my car by myself.
The art
If you are looking to purchase art you can find some amazing work at the Chocolate and Art Show. Much of it is on the edgy side but is quite accomplished. Most of the artists were available to chat about their work and it was a cool way to spend the late afternoon/evening.
I bought early bird tickets on Eventbrite for $20. Approximately 3,000 people visit this 2-day event. You must be 21 and over to attend.
